Learn How to Utilize Bookcases & Shelving to Create a Home That Reflects Your Personal Style

By Leanne Mueller | In-House Designer

When moving into a new home, you are often beginning with a crisp neutral color palate. Although it may be hard to visualize, this is the perfect backdrop for adding your own personality, warmth, and style. By focusing on a few key areas and design elements in your home, you can begin to see your personality reflected while also creating a welcoming space for family and friends. Built-in bookcases and floating shelves are both great outlets to express your style.

Bookshelves

The first step in decorating your bookshelves is choosing a color palate. By keeping colors somewhat limited, you will create a sense of unity in the overall aesthetic. Objects that don’t necessarily belong together will look cohesive if they fall into your chosen color scheme.

Secondly, group books by color and size, then distribute them throughout the shelves for an esthetically pleasing look. Books can be placed either horizontally or vertically, with the spine always placed at the front edge of the shelf. Distributing the books in this way helps to create visual balance. Books also make a great pedestal for smaller objects that you want to highlight. Try layering accessories and artwork, always keeping the shorter items in front. Creating a sense of height and depth adds complexity and interest.

Most importantly, make sure your personality is reflected in your choice of accessories. Items that have a story and reflect who you are make the best design accessories, such as trinkets and art collected during travels. It is okay if you cannot fill your shelves with personal items you love – simply leave open spaces for new finds. As long as you create an interesting backdrop with natural tones, books, and objects then your shelves will look both balanced and ready for your new treasures.

If an item doesn’t feel right to you, don’t use it! Try and avoid putting things on your shelves just to “fill the space”. You are better off with simple, uncluttered spaces.

Keep it simple, keep scale in mind, pick your focal points, and be intentional with the design. If you follow these rules, you will see your home come to life in no time.

Even if you don’t have a lot of books and accessories to fill your shelves, you can still create a balanced design that will evolve over time as you find pieces to add.
